The Boston Celtics’ Six-Year Championship Window

“We
put a team like this together knowing most championship contenders have
like a five- or six-year window,” Pierce said. “This is our third
year. Hopefully we have a few more years to compete but were trying to
get it done now.”

Red
Auerbach built three distinct, non-consecutive championship eras in
Boston, the Russell-Era Celtics, the Cowens-Era Celtics, and the
Bird-Era Celtics. The end of each era was followed by a downturn, where
the green stumbled and bumbled on the court as management tried to find
the right recipe to start the next championship era.

A six year
championship window for the Kevin Garnett Era would make this year
three, with three more to go. Age and injury problems aside, Kevin
Garnett and Rasheed Wallace are only signed-up for this year and two
more. Paul Pierce is in the fold for this year plus one more. A
six-year window thus sounds like wishful thinking to me.

Unless Danny can do what Red never did.

Find a franchise player to build around for post-Garnett Era championship contention before the Garnett Era is over.

Dwayne Wade, are you listening?
