Spring Training: Minor Leaguers Show Off
Pirates 4, Twins 4
The second-to-last spring training game for the Pirates, and it was the minor leaguers who had most of the fun. 1B Adam LaRoche smacked a home run in the 2nd inning, and that was all the scoring that would happen until after most of the major leaguers had sat down and the minor leaguers came in. They added two runs in the 7th inning, on RBI singles by 2B Adenson Chourio and CF Robbie Grossman, to tie the score. After the Twins took a 4-3 lead in the top of the 10th, singles by Grossman, C Jason Jaramillo (both with their second hits of the game) and an RBI single by 1B Jamie Romak tied the game again. LF Brad Corley walked twice and came around to score in the 7th inning. PH Benjamin Gonzalez, RF Marcus Davis, and 3B Anderson Machado also got some playing time.
Zach Duke pitched well in his last pre-season start. He threw 5 scoreless innings and scattered 4 hits and no walks. Donnie Veal made a few mistakes in his 1.1 innings, including a wild pitch and two walks, but the big mistake was a 3-run homer in the 7th inning. Sean Burnett finished the 7th inning for Veal and then went on to pitch a scoreless 8th inning, and Jean Machi pitched a scoreless 9th. Juan Mateo allowed one run on 2 hits in the top of the 10th. The teams decided to quit after 10 innings, and come back for the rematch tomorrow.
