NFL Outsider Season Preview 2009: Tennessee Titans

NFL Outsider is hosting a season preview of all 32 teams. The NFL regular season begins on September 10; in the meantime follow the best NFL bloggers as they analyze their teams in this 2009 season preview.

Jimmy from MusicCityMiracles.com gives insight into what to expect from this year’s Tennessee Titans .

The Tennessee Titans are expecting big things in 2009 coming off their 13-3 effort in 2008.  Chris Johnson, the guy the Titans will build their offensive game plans around, is coming off a stellar rookie season where he rushed for 1,228 yards and 9 touchdowns in his rookie season.  Titans’ head coach Jeff Fisher is a fun first guy, so the combination of Smash and Dash as Johnson and bruiser LenDale White are affectionately known by the Titans fan base, makes for the perfect recipe for “Fisher Ball.”

The Titans also upgraded the wide receiver position in the offseason.  They added Nate Washington from the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Washington has the speed to stretch the field, which is something the Titans have been missing from their receiving core for as long as they have been in Tennessee.  They also drafted Kenny Britt in the first round of this April’s draft.  Britt is the first receiver the Titans have taken in the first round since Kevin Dyson in 1998.

Kerry Collins will enter his second year as the starting quarterback in ‘08.  He excelled last season in the game manager role, and his numbers should be even better with the new weapons that have been added to his arsenal.

The biggest question the Titans have heading into this season is who will replace Albert Haynesworth who signed with the Washington Redskins in free agency.  No one defensive tackle on the roster will be able to replace Haynesworth, but the Titans have high hopes for second year player Jason Jones.  Jones excited the fan base last December against the Pittsburgh Steelers when he had 3.5 sacks and 3 forced fumbles while filling in for an injured Haynesworth.  The Titans also added Jovan Haye in free agency to help fill the void.  Jim Washburn, the Titans’ defensive line coach, is the best in the game, and he will coach these guys up to lessen the blow from the defection of Haynesworth.

The Tennessee defense also boasts a very solid secondary.  Safeties Chris Hope and Michael Griffin both went to the Pro Bowl last season as did cornerback Cortland Finnegan.  With veteran Nick Harper holding down the other corner position, opposing teams will find it hard to gain many yards through the air in 2009.

You can never count a Colts team led by Peyton Manning out, but they will have a hard time adjusting to all of the changes that were made in their organization in the offseason.  The Texans closed last season strong but still look to be a step behind the Titans.  The Jaguars struggled in 2008.  They have gotten better but still appear to be behind the other three teams in the division.  Look for the Titans to repeat as AFC South Champions in 2009.
