McGraw’s Draft Odds and Observations

Mike McGraw of the Daily Herald has posted the odds for each of the lottery teams in terms of who will win the coveted first pick (and Blake Griffin). The Chicago Bulls have the 16th and 26th picks in what appears to be a weak draft, and will probably not be able to pick up more than a rotation player or two. Depending on what happens with Ben Gordon and Kirk Hinrich, the Bulls might need a new backup point guard or a guard with natural scoring ability. An offensively talented big man or a PF with strong rebounding skills would also improve the Bulls’ frontcourt.

McGraw notes that most of the teams with good odds come from the West (OKC, Sacramento, Clippers), but, with the second highest odds at Griffin, the Wizards could be scary. With Arenas healthy and a supporting cast of Antawn Jameson, Caron Butler, and Blake Griffin, the Wizards would have to be a contender for a top 5 spot in the East.

Outside of Griffin, most of the players in this draft class don’t figure to make instant contributions. Spain’s PG Ricky Rubio might be the real deal, and some players may make some ripples straight away, but most of these guys are either projects (UConn’s C Hasheem Thabeet being the best example) or destined for careers as journeymen (UNC’s PF Tyler Hansbrough is widely tipped to fill such a role).

At this point, it’s difficult to say what the Bulls will do with their picks, especially since Gordon’s contract saga remains unresolved. Our picks really don’t seem appealing in terms of trade scenarios, so the Bulls will likely end up with their two picks and look to upgrade the bench. I’m not going to pretend that I know who the Bulls should take, but any readers who have an opinion can feel free to share in the comments below.
