Linkage For The Weekend; Mariotti, Obama, Papelbon

A few quick links for the weekend…

Jeff Fletcher wrote an intriguing piece about a few baseball fans in, of all places, Antarctica. Seriously, Antarctica.

Jay Mariotti, like his Around the Horn colleague Bill Plaschke, was disappointed to see Dodgers fans give Manny Ramirez such a warm welcome in his first home game following a 50-game drug suspension. I guess one of the qualifications for ATH panelists is suffering from sanctimony disorder. Bill and Jay are each ticked that in general most baseball fans aren’t as outraged by the steroid scandal as they are.

Matt Synder feels that we could see a race for the ages in the A.L. East in the second half.

Keith Law breaks down the three top amateur pitching prospects in the world: Aroldis Chapman, Yu Darvish and Stephen Strasburg, who will all be expensive to sign.

Alex Remington produced SlumpBot .200, listing a number of brand name players who struggled in the first half and breaking down their chances of a rebound.

I like Jeff Pearlman, but he really is dead wrong about the steroid issue, falling into the Marriotti/Plaschke camp.

Joe Mauer is Mr. Minnesota, writes Jim Caple.

Chris Berman isn’t quite the same draw as Evan Longoria; sorry, Chris.

Rays Index writes about the chances of the Tampa Bay Rays trading Carl Crawford.

Cork Gaines was prompted to focus on a potential Crawford trade because of this post.

Jonathan Papelbon preferred partying with Playboy bunnies to meeting Barack Obama during All-Star week in St. Louis.

Rob Neyer on a pair of Angels’ All-Star experiences.

Joe Maddon apologized to the Angels for not getting one of those players, Brian Fuentes, into the game.

Susan Slusser provides a mid-season report card for the Oakland A’s.
