Club Pistons Watch: Wait and See (Excerpt)

In the last week, the Pistons beat Washington 98-92 and lost to Memphis 106-103, finishing the 2010 Preseason with a 3-5 record.

The Pistons showed a number of good things and problematic elements that need correcting in both games.

1. The team’s defense is improving, but the Pistons are still prone to lapses that will cost them games. Against Memphis, the Pistons watched the ball several times rather than covered their assignments who either drove to the basket or spotted up for uncontested jumpers.

2. The Pistons are starting to share the ball more. When they do, they get the shots they want, but they are still prone to isolating, going one-on-one, and having fewer assists than opposing team.

3. The Pistons need to take care of the ball more and eliminate unforced turnovers that give easy points to opponents.

4. The Pistons lack a true interior offensive presence to balance the perimeter game as they have been outscored in the paint in several games. This can change as rookie Greg Monroe goes through his NBA learning curve and Charlie Villanueva establishes himself as a consistent post threat….
