Chris Paul - Part 2 of 2 - How Blazers can help rebuild the Hornets?

If New Orleans trades Chris Paul it will have to be a deal that the Hornets can bring back a large financial savings and also players to rebuild the franchise.

Portland rumored offer is not enough

  • The rumor of Nicolas Batum, Andre Miller, Joel Przybilla and Jerryd Bayless totaling $18.16M will not be enough to trade for Chris Paul and Emeka Okafor to meet the 125% Collective Bargaining Agreement trade limitation
    • $18.16M x 1.25 = $22.7M vs. $26.48M (Paul & Okafor salaries)
  • Portland at minimum needs to add ~$3.09M to get within the 125% trade limitation.
  • Below are a couple of options that will help both Portland get Chris Paul and New Orleans to rebuild.

Option 1 - Portland - New Orleans

  • Divide the trades for Chris Paul and Emeka Okafor into two different trades.
  • Trade 1A
    • $12.01M - $3M cash, Andre Miller, Jerryd Bayless, Rudy Fernandez & Nicolas Batum to New Orleans
    • $14.94M - Chris Paul to Portland
  • Trade 1B
    • $12.01M - $3M cash, Joel Przybilla & {New Orleans choice of a Player S&T ($2.08M bi-annual exception)} to New Orleans
    • $11.54M - Emeka Okafor to Portland
  • New Orleans lineup:
    • PG: Andre Miller, Darren Collison, Eric Bledsoe
    • SG: Rudy Fernandez, Jerryd Bayless, Marcus Thornton
    • SF: Nicolas Batum, Predrag Stojakovic, Julian Wright, James Posey
    • PF: David West, Craig Brackins
    • C: Joel Przybilla, (Player $2.08M Bi-Annual)
    • $6M in cash.
    • ~$80M in savings over 5 years
  • One of the major problems that occurs when you look at this lineup is that New Orleans would be stack too much in the guards and small forward position.

Option 2 - Portland - New Orleans - Golden State

  • Golden State is looking to move away from a finesse / transition offense to more half court to build around Stephen Curry’s strength of outside shooting.  Coach Nelson is looking to move Andris Biedrins or Anthony Randolph & Brandan Wright for more muscle inside on defense and rebounding.
  • Trade 2A
    • $15.65M - Emeka Okafor, Julian Wright & Rudy Fernandez to Golden State
    • $12.61M - Anthony Randolph, Brandan Wright, Dan Gadzuric & $3M cash from Portlant to New Orleans
  • Trade 1B
    • $17.44M - $3M cash, Joel Przybilla, Andre Miller, Jerryd Bayless, Jeff Pendergraph, 2011 1st &  $3M to New Orleans
    • $21.42M - Chris Paul & James Posey to Portland
  • New Orleans lineup:
    • PG: Andre Miller, Darren Collison, Eric Bledsoe
    • SG: Jerryd Bayless, Marcus Thornton
    • SF: Anthony Randolph, Predrag Stojakovic
    • PF: David West, Craig Brackins, Brandan Wright
    • C: Joel Przybilla, Dan Gadzuric, Jeff Pendergraph
    • $6M in cash & Portland 2011 1st
    • ~$94M in savings over 5 years
  • Golden State lineup:
    • PG: Stephen Curry, CJ Watson (re-signed)
    • SG: Monta Ellis, Rudy Fernandez, Anthony Morrow, Charlie Bell
    • SF: Julian Wright, Kelenna Azubuike, Reggie Williams
    • PF: Andris Biedrins, Ekpe Udoh, Vladimir Radmanovic
    • C: Emeka Okafor, Rony Turiaf
  • Portland lineup:
    • PG: Chris Paul, Elliot Williams, Patty Mills
    • SG: Brandon Roy, Armon Johnson
    • SF: Nicolas Batum, Luke Babbitt, James Posey
    • PF: LaMarcus Aldridge, Dante Cunningham
    • C: Greg Oden, Marcus Camby
  • Option 2 allows New Orleans to develop Anthony Randolph at SF and also pick up a 2011 st round pick from Portland.
