Caps, Semin agree to one year extension

The Washington Capitals and Alexander Semin have agreed to term on a one year contract extension, assuring Semin’s return to Washington next season.

When the extension expires, the winger will become an unrestricted free agent.

“It’s what the player preferred,” McPhee said of the one-year deal. “We discussed a number of options, but this is the way he wanted to go for now. Which is fine with us because it gives us flexibility going forward.”

The deal assures Semin’s return to Washington next season, but then provides for Semin becoming an unrestricted free agent after the 2010-11 season.  It’s a good deal for both sides.  Caps get Semin back for one additional season as they make a Stanley Cup run this year and next year.  Following that, Semin would gain the freedom to seek the best deal he can find in the open market.

“I am extremely happy to sign here,” he said through an interpreter. “I like this team; I like everything here. It’s native to me here now.”

The Caps are also working on a long term contract extension with Nicklas Backstrom.  Negotiations there are thought to be going much smoother on a more long term deal, possibly 5 or 6 years.
