Boston Celtics: Hungry For Another Championship Run
The 2009-10 NBA season will be starting soon and the Boston Celtics are on pace to reclaim what they believe is rightfully theirs. Paul Pierce said as much in his final news conference after they lost to the Orlando Magic.
This past off-season Cleveland, Los Angeles Lakers, San Antonio Spurs, Orlando and to some extent Portland, with the signing of Andre Miller strengthened their roster. Boston added more veteran experience to its bench with the signing of Rasheed Wallace, Shelden Williams and Marquis Daniels. Kevin Garnett has reported that everything is as it’s supposed to be and Glen “Big Baby” Davis is back to claim his moniker as the “Ticket Stub”.
The Celtics have a championship caliber team but still have questions to answer when it comes to solidifying their roster.
Boston has one more roster spot to fill and the burning question remains should they go big or small. There are arguments for either choice. The Celtic big men are long in the tooth and there are injury concerns. KG, and Wallace are both on the wrong side of 30 and Kendrick Perkins is essentially operating on one shoulder. Beyond that Davis and Williams are their only other option; Scalabrine is a crap shoot he is only good for two minutes at the most. The need for another ‘big’ seems to be the more pressing issue here.
Lester Hudson was the Celtics lone pick in the second round; he played well enough in summer league that the Celtics released the ever affable Gabe Pruitt. Lester has yet to sign a contract because of the broken finger he suffered in summer league play. Danny has freely admitted that he has been watching his progress throughout his collegiate career.
Ainge has a history as a GM of getting players he personally scouted in College or high school. Sebastian Telfair, Rajon Rondo, Marquis Daniels and Lester Hudson were all personal favorites of Boston’s GM.
One thing for sure Danny will give Lester every opportunity to make the active roster during pre-season. If the Daniels experiment as a quasi-point works out, he will be playing either in Europe or the D league. Robert Swift, another Ainge favorite may yet become a Celtic if that occurs.
This season gang-green is primed to compete knowing that they will be prepared for a championship run.
