Bills interested in DeShaun Foster; 49ers RB situation a little clearer
49ers free agent DeShaun Foster has been getting some looks by the Buffalo Bills.
With Bills RB Marshawn Lynch’s supsension for the first three games of
the season and backup RB Fred Jackson not under contract, the Bills
will be in need of a running back to start the season.
The 49ers have been in no rush to re-sign Foster, claiming that
they will find Frank Gore’s backup via the Draft. But with Foster more
than likely off the 49ers radar, this still leaves the 49ers with three
running backs on the roster: Gore, Michael Robinson any Thomas Clayton.
If
the 49ers do decide to use a draft pick to grab a running back, that
would eventually leave the roles pretty much decided for the upcoming
season.
Gore will platoon the majority of the rushes while
Robinson would be used as a third down back or even take snaps for the
Wildcat offense. That would leave Clayton and the rookie to battle it
out for the backup role. Looking at Clayton’s lack of opportunity to
get any playing time in the regular season, it might just seem like the
rookie will be the true backup to Gore.
The rookie will have
to shoulder a huge load, however. Gore has had a rough previous two
seasons after a Pro Bowl 2006 campaign. Gore has been hampered by
injuries as well, so we could very well see a two-back system. The
system has been successful in thea league (notable in Jacksonville for
the past few seasons and the Panthers last season). The 49ers are
looking for a bulky running back (about 230 pounds) to possible absorb
the tough runs up the middle.
General manager Scot
McCloughan has already said the 49ers will draft a running back and the
only question now really is how will the rookie be used for this
upcoming season?
