49ers could be passing more than we expected
One of the things the 49ers are doing this year is improving their running game. However, the team isn’t all about the run. I had stated in the past that the team would be run-oriented. And the team would be best fit for a running. However, in a piece written by Kevin Lynch, we should not sleep on the passing attack of the 49ers.
This article brought a really good point that I don’t think a lot of writers have addressed. The passing game will be a vital part of the attack, and we might see a lot of it.
One reason why the team doesn’t look to be passing that much may be to the fact that we don’t have any big name wide outs. Also, we don’t know how’s passing the balls to them. RB Frank Gore is clearly the team’s best offensive player. If the team can give him the ball, we assume that he’ll be awesome with it.
It’s hard to imagine much with the team’s passing game. After the “failed” attempt to get Kurt Warner, the 49ers are back at square one. Shaun Hill has a great record as a starter (7-3), but the coach doesn’t believe in him. Alex Smith just signed a new contract, but not many fans believe in him.
Our best receiver on the team (Isaac Bruce) might not be back next season. And who else can catch the ball? Jason Hill and Josh Morgan are very inexperienced. Arnaz Battle may be the best receiver on the team, and he could be fighting for playing time with newly signed Brandon Jones.
And let’s not forget tight end Vernon Davis and all that untapped potential.
The 49ers’ best running season was two years ago. The 49ers are trying to duplicate that with the return of FB Moran Norris. However, the new offensive line of youngsters Chilo Rachal, Joe Staley and possibly Andre Smith might not be enough to get the team to be a dangerous running team. And besides, we don’t even know who is going to back up Gore.
So if the 49ers want to open up the run, they have to pass. The team is full of players that don’t necessarily bring fear to the opposing secondary. Yet if the team is going to have a balance attack, there has to be a passing game that at least helps the team open up the run.
Shaun Hill can do it. The young receivers can do it. Davis can finally emerge as a superstar tight end. How much of an opportunity will they get? Let’s just see how much the team is willing to pass.
EDIT 6:36PM: If the 49ers go for recently released Torry Holt, then I know they want to pass.
