09 Jays - Some Bold Predictions

This is the Toronto Sports Exchange, the Blue Jays, Leafs, and Raptors blog.  It is a place for fans to come and express their thoughts and opinions on all things Toronto.  Feel free to post comments, reactions, or questions - no matter how mundane, insipid, or redundant.

So let’s get started.

As of April 8 at around 7pm the Toronto Blue Jays are 2-0.  That’s right they are currently enjoying that rarest of achievements - an undefeated MLB season.  Is this surprising?  Well I guess some people would expect the Blue Jays to muster a win when Roy Halladay pitches, so that accounts for one win.   So what about Tuesday night’s game?  I would describe it as a mixed bag.

For about 7 innings not much happened.  I was watching from the third base side, and the most exciting thing that happened was probably a few long fly balls.  Then there was the agonizing David Purcey pitch out error.  One in which he managed to throw a wild pitch during an intentional walk, (which was random enough) after which he managed to then over throw the pick off attempt from the plate to second which allowed a Detroit run.  These are not the kind of plays you need to make if you want to win a game.  I was not happy.

But then the Tigers decided to make a pitching change and take out Jackson, who had been throwing a very efficient game, and the Jays’ batters decided they may as well start doing something to make the ticket worth the price of admission.  Scott Rolen got the ball rolling with a solo home run, then Aaron Hill showed he was back to form when he launched a 3 run homer to give the Jays a lead.  The Jays would eventually win the game on the most exciting play in baseball - the walk off sac fly, in this instance from catcher Rod Barajas.

So what did we learn about the 09 Jays on Tuesday?

Number 1:  They may actually have some power in this line up, something that plagued them all of last season, and something which they were criticized for not acquiring in the off season.

Number 2:  BJ Ryan is scary, and not scary good - more like scary “is this guy going to get back on track to where he was a few seasons ago”?  Or “is he going to continue to blow saves”?  I guess he did get a win last night… But with a fast ball that maxed out last night around 88 Mph, things aren’t looking great.

Number 3:  The Jays have some confidence.  Tuesday’s comeback was impressive because up to that point they hadn’t done much, but they stuck with it and turned the game around quickly.

Well it is now 7:14 and the Jays are down by 3 in the first inning.  I’m going to go out on a limb here and predict a comeback… They are going to need it if they are going to have a perfect season.
